This is literally the best Easy Homemade Sweet and Sour Sauce you will ever make! It takes just a few simple ingredients and is really delicious. Serve with your favorite egg rolls, our Sweet Cream Cheese Wontons or Chicken Fried Rice.
How to make Sweet and Sour Sauce
To make this recipe, you’ll need:
- Canned Pineapple Juice
- Brown Sugar
- White (or Rice) Vinegar
- Low Sodium Soy Sauce
- Cornstarch + Water
- Optional – a few drops of red food coloring
I recommend using canned pineapple juice or the 100% pure pineapple juice that fruit comes packed in. You can save the drained fruit for enjoying later 🙂
While most of the ingredients are whisked together, you’ll want to create a separate slurry with the cornstarch and water to avoid any lumps that may occur.
After whisking together the pineapple juice, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup and soy sauce, add it to a hot skillet and bring to a boil.
Whisk in your cornstarch slurry until it thickens. This happens VERY quickly, so don’t walk away from it. Pull off of the heat as soon as it thickens.
At this point, you can opt for “restaurant-style” sauce which is well, red. While the food coloring will not have even the slightest effect on the taste, it does make for a pretty presentation. I added just three small drops for the final color.
And there you have it! My go-to Easy Homemade Sweet and Sour Sauce. Dip your eggs rolls or chicken nuggets in it. Use it to make Sweet and Sour Chicken or drizzle it over fried rice. It’s just delicious!
